Because reading is the gateway to knowledge and lifelong learning, because the teen years are the gateway to adulthood, and because Missouri was the Gateway to the West, the Gateway Readers Award is for authors of books chosen by high school students in Missouri. The winner of the annual Gateway Readers Award is selected by students in grades nine through twelve through an online vote. Copies of the nominated books are available in the SCHS Library Media Center. Students who read 3 or more titles from this list are eligible to participate in the statewide voting for the winner in March. 2022 Winner Heroine by Mindy McGinnisWhen a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. With a new circle of friends--fellow injured athletes, others with just time to kill--Mickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.
